I enjoy making bowls with feet. A traditional New Zealand approach developed by Ian Fish in the last century.
Part of the concept of uplift: allowing the work to come off the ground, giving it drive and lightness. A style developed and improved by New Zealand woodturners such as Terry Scott and Dick Veitch. All wood is used – the native wood piece in the photo, Pohutukawa storm recovered timber came from the seashore. It contained many inclusions, odd holes and mixed grain. A wonderful challenge that produced a pleasing result.
Rough uneven and holed timber destined for the fireplace has ended up as a practical item of kitchenware. The bowl was finished with food safe finishes and has a happy home in the kitchen.
