Carved and pattered whales; a way to bring the pacific texture onto a moving form. The first series were to show the whale form on its own, bring a focus to the patterns and show off the individual drive of the creature.
I wanted to get the wood to show off the colours of the ocean while at the same time accenting the patterns. The bodies are turned in sections, joined and carved, and dyed before the pattern is applied with pyrgraphy on the the form. The dye is drawn up with the resin in the wood to give the ocean colours a glow.
