Texures on the move

As part of living in a community with large Pacific Islands groups, there has been a regular challenge to use the idioms of our local New Zealand and Pacific art. The bowl is part of a Pacific textures series that  incorporates  a new  approach to textural Pyrographic branding.  I have been working on a variety of Pacific Islands basket weave patterns that have a strong touch  component. .

The native timber bowl with its honeycomb set of holes allows the texture to highlight the form and shape of a bowl or work. The natural resin in the Totara is drawn up by the heat of the pyrography tool highlighting the natural pattern,  texture and colour .

The wood used in this series of bowls was New Zealand grown. It was recovered, recycled, cleaned up  and given a new life.
